In the spring and early summer of 1988 I followed my old college track coach, Pat Mulcahy, around Southern California as he coached Marcus Gordien in the discus. Marcus had been 5th place in the 1984 US Olympic Track and Field trials and was training to qualify for the 1988 trials and hopefully the Olympic Games. Marcus is from a track and field family in which his father, Fortune Gordien had won both Olympic silver and bronze medals and was a world's record holder as well.
