Artwalk November Installment 4

Tintype Photography! I've been to a lot of first Thursday artwalks, but somehow I never visited a hallway in what I believe is the "57 Biscayne Building, near the Soil Gallery. Anyway, I made a diversion down this narrow hallway for the first time and saw a nice old copy camera (below) off in a very small space to my right, but continued on. This is a tintype photo of the camera I saw. When I returned back on my way out I caught a whiff of some chemicals and found a darkroom and a few people developing tintype photographs. I then noticed a couple of daguerreotypes displayed on the wall (below). A daguerreotype is an image created on a piece of polished silver (plate). It was exciting to

Artwalk November Installment 3

I can't believe that November has gone by so fast and I'm still writing about this month's artwalk so late, less than a week before we do it again. At Greg Kucera, Seattle artist Mark Calderon, has a series of cutouts and sculptures. This one is titled: FIGHTER (Orange), 2016 Dyed industrial felt. A number of the pieces have a boxing and Muhammed Ali theme. This piece is from Show of Hands titled: MANUS (Protective), 2016 and is constructed from mica. Mark always produces provocative and intriguing work. Take a look if you have time. It is a two monh show so it closes just before Christmas. Here is a link to the Kucera site and show I was not familiar with Jeffery Simmons watercolors b

November Artwalk Installment 2

These whimsical paintings by Casey McGlynn at Foster White caught my eye. They're actually pretty humorous. "Primitively" painted the artist appears to be drawing from their life growing up and living in Canada. The show is titled Never feel Sad. Here is a link to a Canadian Gallery and a bit more background. (Bugura / Matheson) Here is a link to the catalogue. This is 1977 Toronto Punk Explosion.. and is a chronicle of just that. This is Overweight People Who Have Influenced MY Life. Horse on White is this piece. Another new discovery for myself and worth the look! Stop by before the end of the month.

Artwalk November Installment 1

A bit late posting my observations from this month's pre-election artwalk. Greg Kucera had a few pieces by Artist Maria Watt whom I've talked about before. These were a pair of carved white pine sculptures from her "Blanket Stories" series. This one is a full 12 feet tall echoing her earlier works of stacked blankets. A detail shot of the carving and "checks" that add to the piece. A smaller piece incorporating actual blankets into the wood carving with a metal table. Around six feet tall total. This is titled "Blanket Ledger" and is yellow cedar. Here is a link to her website and this exact piece. It has been exciting to see Maria's work continue to grow. Always worth a visit to explor
