Michael Brewster

I was greatly saddened to hear of the passing of artist Michael Brewster while I was on my trip to Europe. Michael was one of my professors at the Claremont Graduate University. He was renowned for his acoustic sculptures. He was at the forefront of this conceptual art movement in 1970's. Some of his technology might seem a bit trivial now, considering the electronics we now have, but what he was doing in the 1970's and 80's was really at the forefront of art for the time. He was rewarded for his work with exhibitions at the Whitney and LACMA to name just a few.

Michael was on my advisory committee for my MFA. I chose him because he was one of the most intelligent artists I had ever met, and was also a tremendous writer. How else would you get commissions and exhibitions for acoustic sculpture as the thought that cross my mind?

Here is a link to an obituary.
