Finally finished up this baby. I has been sitting around the studio quite some time. Started out as a "blank" carcass a few years ago and I finally found the right images and inspiration to finish it. This is of course a photo of it open, go to the altarpiece or And/Or series page to see it closed as well. Acrylic on wood with PVC pipe. 1 1/2" x 15 1/5" x 24" open.
I have another piece built. I'm stockpiling as many unpainted works as I can for the summer when I have the time to get to finishing them. This one will have the faux galvanized effect on the frame. I'll work out the details for the rest of it as I go (as usual). By the title you can tell that it is yet another for the And/Or series.
My daughters turned 18 recently and we ventured down to the Experience Music Project and a tour of the Hello Kitty exhibit. Turns out I had a lot to learn about Hello Kitty as the whole history was spelled out before you. The exhibit gave me a bit of a headache; too bright, odd techno music, pink everywhere, and crowds. Kinda like the mall. So the installation department at the EMP did a bang up job putting Hello Kitty in the perfect setting.
Some sad news. Norm Hines, sculptor, ceramicist, and professor passed away on Sunday May 1st in Claremont California. Norm was both my ceramics and sculpture professor at Pomona and again while I was at the Claremont Graduate University.
I have many fond memories of studio dinners, bike rides, and especially installations of his work. He will be greatly missed.
